What Is Botox?

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable that temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — the lines that form when you squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows. It’s been used in cosmetic and medical applications for over 20 years and remains the most widely studied aesthetic treatment in the world.

Here’s the simple version: your facial muscles contract thousands of times a day. Over the years, those repeated contractions etch lines into your skin — the “11s” between your brows, crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes, horizontal forehead lines. Botox interrupts that signal between nerve and muscle, allowing the skin above to smooth out while you still look completely natural.

Botox isn’t about freezing your face. It’s about giving those overworked muscles a break so the lines they’ve created can soften and, over time, stop deepening. Think of it as preventive maintenance for your skin.

For patients with medical conditions like chronic migraines, TMJ, or excessive sweating, Botox serves a therapeutic role as well — learn more about medical Botox.

Botox Before and After

The best Botox results are the ones you almost can’t see. You look refreshed, rested, and like yourself — just smoother. The goal is never to look “done.” It’s to look like you’ve been on vacation.

These are real results from real Illume patients. Every face responds differently, which is why your provider tailors the treatment to your specific anatomy, muscle strength, and goals.

Treatment Areas

Botox treats more than just the forehead. Here’s a guide to the areas our team commonly addresses — your provider will recommend which combination will give you the most natural, balanced result during your consultation.

Treatment AreaWhat It Addresses
Forehead linesHorizontal lines when you raise your eyebrows
Frown lines (“11s”)Vertical lines between the brows
Crow’s feetLines at the outer corners of the eyes
Brow liftSubtle lift to the tail of the brow
Bunny linesLines on the sides of the nose when scrunching
Lip flipSubtle upper lip eversion — not volume, just shape
Masseter (jawline slimming)Slims a square jawline, relieves jaw clenching
Chin dimplingSmooths the “orange peel” texture on the chin
Neck bands (platysma)Softens vertical neck bands

The three most popular areas — forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet — are what Allergan (the maker of Botox) calls the “Look of 3.” These muscle groups work as a system, so treating all three together creates the most natural, balanced result. When you get the full Look of 3 treatment at Illume, your results are backed by our Look of 3 Guarantee — complimentary touch-ups if needed to make sure you love your outcome. Your provider will map out the right combination of areas and dosing based on your anatomy and goals.

What to Expect During Treatment

Botox appointments at Illume are fast, straightforward, and surprisingly comfortable.

Before your treatment: Your provider will review your goals, assess which muscles are driving the lines you want to address, and mark the injection sites. This assessment is what separates great Botox from average Botox — placement matters more than product.

During treatment: Botox is injected with a very fine needle. Most patients describe it as a brief pinch — far less uncomfortable than they expected. The entire treatment takes 10-15 minutes depending on how many areas you’re treating. No anesthesia required, though we offer NitroNox (laughing gas) for patients who want extra comfort.

After treatment: You can return to your normal routine immediately. No downtime, no recovery period. We’ll ask you to avoid intense exercise for 24 hours and to stay upright for 4 hours after treatment. Don’t massage or press on the treated areas.

Timeline: You’ll start to notice results in 3-5 days, with full effect visible at about 2 weeks. If this is your first time, your provider may start conservatively and bring you back at 2 weeks for a touch-up — it’s always easier to add a few units than to wait out a result you don’t love.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

This is one of the most-searched questions about Botox, and the honest answer is: it depends on how many areas you’re treating and how many units those areas need.

Here’s what helps put the investment in perspective.

The surgical alternatives to what Botox achieves carry a very different price tag. A brow lift averages $5,000-$8,000 in surgeon fees alone — and that’s before anesthesia and facility costs push the total to $10,000-$15,000 or more. An upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) runs $4,000-$8,000. Both require general anesthesia, weeks of recovery, and produce permanent results you can’t fine-tune if your preferences change over time.

Botox achieves many of the same smoothing and lifting effects — softened forehead lines, a subtle brow lift, eliminated crow’s feet — at a fraction of those numbers, with zero surgery, zero downtime, and results you can adjust at every visit as your face and preferences evolve.

That said, surgery is the right choice for some patients. If you’re dealing with significant skin laxity or drooping that Botox can’t address, we’ll tell you that honestly. Our job is to recommend what will actually work for your goals — not to sell you on a treatment that isn’t the right fit.

During your consultation, your provider will map out exactly which areas to treat, how many units to expect, and what that costs — all before any product is placed. No surprises, no pressure.

Our IllumèNaughty Beauty Bank membership program includes member pricing on Botox and makes regular maintenance more sustainable — it’s designed to make self-care a rhythm, not a one-time splurge. We also offer financing options to help you invest in yourself on your timeline.

Baby Botox and Preventive Botox

You don’t have to wait until lines are etched into your skin to start Botox. In fact, starting earlier — with fewer units — can prevent those lines from forming in the first place.

Baby Botox is exactly what it sounds like: smaller doses of Botox placed strategically across the treatment areas. Instead of 25 units for forehead lines, you might get 10-15. The result is a softened, natural look with maximum movement preserved. It’s ideal for patients in their late 20s to early 40s who want subtle prevention, not dramatic correction.

Preventive Botox takes the same principle and applies it before wrinkles become visible at rest. If you’re noticing faint lines when you make expressions but your skin still bounces back when your face is relaxed, you’re in the sweet spot for preventive treatment. A small amount of Botox now keeps those dynamic lines from becoming static wrinkles later.

Our team sees patients across the full spectrum — from first-timers in their late 20s to patients who’ve been getting Botox for years. Wherever you’re starting, we’ll tailor the dose to your age, your muscle activity, and your goals.

Botox vs. Dysport

If you’ve been researching injectables, you’ve probably seen Dysport mentioned alongside Botox. Both are neurotoxins that work the same way — temporarily relaxing muscles to smooth wrinkles. But they’re not identical.

The key differences:

  • Spread: Dysport diffuses slightly more than Botox, which makes it a great choice for larger areas like the forehead. Botox stays more localized, making it ideal for precise areas like crow’s feet or the brow.
  • Onset: Dysport tends to kick in faster — some patients see results in 2-3 days compared to Botox’s 3-5 days.
  • Duration: Both last about 3-4 months on average, though some patients find one lasts slightly longer for them than the other.
  • Unit conversion: They’re dosed differently — 1 unit of Botox is not the same as 1 unit of Dysport. Your provider accounts for this when planning your treatment.

At Illume, we carry both Botox and Dysport because different patients (and different treatment areas) respond better to one or the other. Your provider will recommend which one is the best fit during your consultation. Many of our patients use both — Dysport on the forehead, Botox for crow’s feet — depending on what each area needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Botox last?

Botox typically lasts 3-4 months. Some patients find their results last closer to 4-5 months after consistent treatments over time, as the muscles gradually weaken and require less product. Your provider will help you find the right maintenance schedule — most patients come in 3-4 times per year.

How long does Botox take to work?

You’ll start to see results in 3-5 days, with full effect at about 2 weeks. Dysport tends to kick in slightly faster (2-3 days). If this is your first treatment, we recommend waiting the full 2 weeks before assessing your results — the product is still settling during that window.

Is Botox safe?

Yes. Botox has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002 and for medical applications even longer. It’s the most extensively studied aesthetic treatment in the world, with over 20 years of safety data. Side effects are generally mild — occasional bruising or a slight headache that resolves within a day. Serious complications are extremely rare when administered by a trained, experienced provider.

What should I not do after Botox?

Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours. Stay upright for at least 4 hours after treatment — don’t lie flat or bend over for extended periods. Don’t massage, rub, or apply heavy pressure to the treated areas. Avoid alcohol the evening of your treatment. These precautions help the Botox stay where it was placed and reduce the chance of bruising.

Can Botox cause cancer?

No. There is no scientific evidence linking Botox to cancer. Botox has been used in millions of treatments worldwide over more than two decades with no established connection to cancer risk. The botulinum toxin is injected in very small, localized doses that affect only the targeted muscles.

Can you exercise after Botox?

We recommend avoiding vigorous exercise for 24 hours after treatment. Light activity like walking is fine. The concern is that increased blood flow and body heat could cause the product to migrate from the injection site before it fully binds to the muscle. After 24 hours, you’re clear to resume your normal workout routine.

How often should you get Botox?

Most patients get Botox every 3-4 months to maintain results. Over time, with consistent treatment, some patients find they can stretch their appointments to every 4-5 months as their muscles require less product. Your provider will help you find the schedule that keeps your results consistent without overtreating.

How many units of Botox do I need?

That depends on your anatomy, your muscle strength, and which areas you’re treating — and it’s genuinely different for every patient, which is why we determine your dosing during the consultation rather than over the phone. What we can tell you is that the most popular treatment combination is what Allergan calls the “Look of 3” — forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet treated together. Allergan’s FDA-recommended guideline for the Look of 3 is 64 units across those three areas. When you get the full Look of 3 at Illume (or exceed that dosage), your results are backed by our Look of 3 Guarantee — complimentary touch-ups if needed. It’s our way of standing behind the result when you invest in the full treatment.

Can I get a facial after Botox?

Yes — just wait at least 24 hours before any facial treatment. After that, facials are actually a great complement to Botox. At Illume, we offer DiamondGlow rather than HydraFacial. DiamondGlow uses a diamond-tip wand to simultaneously exfoliate, extract, and infuse medical-grade SkinMedica serums directly into the skin — a level of customization and clinical depth that HydraFacial doesn’t match. Many of our patients pair regular Botox with DiamondGlow treatments for a complete maintenance routine that addresses both wrinkles and overall skin quality.
